Fall Lawn Care: Must Do’s for Your Yard

by | Jul 10, 2025

As the weather cools and leaves start to fall, your yard may look like it’s ready to take a break, but your grass still has work to do. Fall lawn care is one of the most important steps to having a healthy, resilient lawn all year round. With the right approach, you can help your lawn recover from summer stress and prepare for winter dormancy, so it’s lush and green next spring.

At Bethel Power Equipment we help Connecticut homeowners and landscapers with lawn care in the fall with the right equipment and knowledge. Here’s what you should be doing.

Why Fall Lawn Care Is So Important

Even though growth above ground slows down in the fall, roots are still active building up for the winter months ahead. Proper fall lawn care promotes deeper root growth, better nutrient uptake, and increased resistance to cold, disease, and weeds.

If you skip these tasks you’ll end up with compacted soil, thin or patchy turf, and a slower recovery in the spring.

A Smart Fall Lawn Care Schedule

Having a fall lawn care schedule helps you get the most out of your efforts. In Connecticut and the Northeast, start around mid-September and finish by late November before the first hard frost.

Early Fall (September to early October)

  • Keep mowing. Mow as needed, gradually lowering the mowing height to about 2.5-3 inches. This will prevent snow mold and mats in the grass.
  • Core aeration. Aeration relieves soil compaction and improves oxygen and nutrient delivery to the roots. Early fall is the best time because the grass still has time to heal.
  • Overseed. Cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass do best with fall overseeding. Seed germination is strongest when daytime temps are 60-75°F.
  • Fertilize. Apply a slow-release, nitrogen-rich fertilizer to strengthen roots and support energy storage for winter dormancy.

Mid-Fall (October)

  • Dethatch (if necessary). Thatch layers over ½ inch thick can block water and nutrients. Dethatching tools or power rakes remove this buildup and improve soil contact.
  • Leaf cleanup. Leaves trap moisture which leads to disease and mold. Use mulching mowers, blowers, or rakes to keep the lawn clear.

Late Fall (Late October to Early November)

Final mow. Mow your lawn one last time before the first freeze, keeping the grass a little shorter to reduce mold risk.

  • Compost topdressing. A thin layer of compost adds organic matter, improves soil structure, and feeds microbial life.
  • Winterize equipment. Drain fuel tanks, clean air filters, and store machines properly to protect your investment.

Fall Lawn Care Tips

Here are some proven fall lawn care tips:

  • Use the right blade height. Don’t cut the grass too short, it increases vulnerability to frost and reduces photosynthesis.
  • Don’t fertilize too early. Wait until daytime temps are in the 50s or 60s to avoid promoting too much top growth.
  • Seed early enough. Overseeding should be done at least 45 days before the first expected frost, usually mid-September to early October in CT.
  • Sharpen mower blades. Clean cuts reduce disease risk and improve nutrient uptake.

Equipment for Fall

At Bethel Power Equipment we have fall-ready gear to make lawn care easier:

  • Leaf blowers and vacuums to keep your yard clear and safe
  • Dethatchers to break up buildup before seeding
  • Core aerators for improved soil health
  • Mowers with mulching blades for leaf recycling and final trims
  • Battery-powered tools for quiet, emissions-free yardwork

We also offer maintenance services, blade sharpening, fuel system cleaning, and winterization for your machines.

Lawn Care is a Long Term Investment

Fall may feel like the end of the season but it’s really the start of your lawn’s next growth cycle. Lawn care in September, October, and November gives your grass a head start on spring by strengthening roots, repairing summer damage, and setting a strong foundation for next year’s growth.

By following a smart fall lawn care schedule, overseeding at the right time, and staying consistent with mowing you’ll help your lawn survive the winter and come back thicker, greener, and healthier when the snow melts.
